Day 186 of 365 Things To Do in Panama
Day 186 of 365 Things To Do in Panama. See the Many Lighthouses of Panama!
Many of the Lighthouses of Panama are associated with the opening of the Panama Canal. Most of the lighthouses assist with the passage of ships on the Canal.
The Canal opened on 15 August 1914 after ten years of U.S. construction following earlier work by a French company.
There are said to be around 40 lighthouses on the Canal, many are still in operation today.
Two of the oldest lighthouses were built in the the period of construction of the Canal by the French between 1881 and 1898. They are Isla Grande Lighthouse and Punta Toro Lighthouse in the Atlantic.
