Day 248 of 365 Things To Do in Panama

Day 248 of 365 Things To Do in Panama. Celebrate International Indigenous Women's Day!

Today is Dia Internacional de la Mujer Indigena or International Indigenous Women's Day ~

Celebrated since 1983, the day pays tribute to all native indigenous women who gave their lives for their families and who gave themselves in body and soul.

The origin of Indigenous Women's Day dates back to the Meeting of Organizations and Movements of America in which a tribute was paid to a brave Peruvian indigenous woman, Bartolina Sisa, who fought against domination of Spanish conquerors for mistreatment and oppression. She was murdered on September 5.

Panama passed the law on March 31, 2015 with an article that states “September 5 of each year is declared Indigenous Women’s Day, in order to highlight and promote the values, virtues, culture and traditions that the Panamanian indigenous women contribute to national development.”
