Day 254 of 365 Things To Do in Panama

Day 254 of 365 Things To Do in Panama. Pick up Some Plantains!

Plantains are very popular in Panama partly because they are a fruit available all year long.

They are often confused with bananas but with one bite you will know something is different! They are less sugary and more starchy than dessert bananas. Similarly, they are a good source of Vitamin C and A, potassium and fiber.

Plantains are a staple food in tropical regions of the world and treated like potatoes. Rarely eaten raw, you will find them mostly fried or baked as a side dish. In Panama, patacones (twice fried plantain patties) are very popular and served with most local dishes.
