Day 165 of 365 Things To Do in Panama

Day 165 of 365 Things To Do in Panama. Explore the Natural Beauty of Lake Bayano Caves!

Lake Bayano is the Jewel of Panama located at the edge of the Darién wilderness.

The tranquil spectacular environment is home to hundreds of birds and other animal species, such as monkeys, big cats. The Panama Caves of Lake Bayano were formed over many centuries by an underground river that continues to flow today. A series of caverns carved by crashing waterfalls echo through each smoothly rounded chamber. The caves are easily entered and enjoyed by foot year-round, and partially by boat during the rainy season.

Lake Bayano was created from the Rio Bayano and its tributaries following the construction of a dam and hydroelectric plant that today supplies Panama City and other areas with their electricity.

Bayano Lake is located 90km (56mi, 1.5hrs) east of Panama City on the Panamerican Freeway.
