Day 264 of 365 Things To Do in Panama

Day 264 of 365 Things To Do in Panama. Spend Some Time on Isla Grande!

Escape to the island of Isla Grande, a popular getaway spot for Panama City locals - come for the day or spend the night.

Contrary to the name it is a small, picturesque tropical island 15 km off the shores of Portobelo on the northern Caribbean coast. It is home to just over 1000 people many who are of African descent. The main industry is fishing and coconut harvesting - a taste you find in the fine island cuisine.

White sand beaches, crystal clear turquoise water and palm trees make Isla Grande an ideal spot for snorkeling, scuba diving, spearfishing or soaking up the relaxing vibe. The island is one of Panama’s favorite surf spots and many competitions take place here

There are no roads, just a path along the eastern island perimeter. Take a walk up to the lighthouse at the top of the hill and enjoy the spectacular view.

Don't miss the well known statue of a black Christ standing on coral reef which marks the entrance between the island and the mainland for those arriving by the sea.

The statue is believed to date back to 1658, when it was found washed up on the shores of the Portobelo harbor. There are many stories of how the statue arrived.
